In addition to my work as a professional journalist, I'm particualrly dedicated to giving back through community service and using my skills as a communicator to assist not-for-profits and community organizations.

Led Chicago chapter of international Down Syndrome Awareness not-for-profit. Took over flailing organization that was $25,000 in debt, revamped and recruited new 10-member board, refocused fundraising efforts and highlighted educational programming (such as literacy and math tutoring for individuals with Down syndrome) and communications to create active member community and revitalized chapter in nation’s third largest city. At end of one year term, GiGi’s Playhouse Chicago finished the year in the black with $50,000 operating budget and money in reserve.
Communications and Outreach Chair

Upon completion of one-year presidency term, stepped down to head marketing, communications and outreach for Chicago chapter of international Down Syndrome Awareness Association, with goal of doubling overall organization membership within one year, and creating organized communications plan that included social media presence, monthly printed newsletters and weekly e-mail blasts. In one year, the organization’s master database doubled, as did e-mail distribution lists. Weekly e-mails averaged 30% open rate.

Head of all Parent-Teacher communication efforts for Blue Ribbon-winning elementary school in Hinsdale, Illinois. Responsoibile for creation, crafting and editing weekly e-mail newsletter (75% open rate), Facebook presence and writing attention-grabbing press releases.

Assisted school principal in creating and honing school’s mission (in conjunction with its School Improvement Plan for Advancing Academic Achievement) and increasing community involvement. As an elected member of school’s governing body, had vote and voice in expenditures and budgeting. Helped create mission and commitment to education and acceptance of all students, particularly those with disabilities, through school programs and creation of school’s annual Inclusion Week.
